Yongin Special City Signs Agreement with Road Traffic Authority to Build Future-Oriented Transportation Infrastructure

Yongin Special City (Mayor Lee Sang-il) signed a business agreement with the Korea Road Traffic Authority (hereinafter the Authority) for the ‘Establishment of Future Convergence Transportation Infrastructure and Service Promotion’ at the Authority’s Seoul branch on the 11th.

The agreement was joined by Yongin Special City, along with Sejong Special Self-Governing City, Goyang Special City, Siheung City, Dongducheon City, Gimcheon City, Seosan City, and Mappers Co., Ltd.

Through this agreement, the city plans to strengthen its linkage with the Authority’s real-time traffic signal information system and provide more convenient traffic information to citizens by connecting it with transportation services such as navigation platforms.

The city will cooperate in the establishment and maintenance of advanced transportation infrastructure and the collection of traffic information, while the Authority will be responsible for the maintenance of the traffic signal information system as well as technology development and support.

This system provides drivers with real-time information such as traffic signal status and remaining time (in seconds), helping them adjust their driving speed in line with signal changes at intersections ahead. It is effective in providing drivers with a predictable traffic environment and in preventing accidents caused by sudden acceleration or braking.

Previously, the city has established and operated a real-time traffic signal information system at 13 intersections in the Dongbaek District of Giheung-gu since March of this year. The city plans to expand the real-time traffic signal information system that can be linked with navigation platforms to 110 major intersections by October.

Going forward, the city plans to gradually expand the scope of real-time traffic information use and develop it into a foundation that can also be utilized for future transportation services such as autonomous driving and the next-generation intelligent transportation system (C-ITS).

Mayor Lee Sang-il said, “This agreement is significant in that it broadens the scope of use for traffic information, including the real-time traffic signal information system, and establishes a foundation for responding to the future transportation environment,” adding, “We will cooperate with the Authority to expand smart transportation services that citizens can experience in their daily lives and continue to broaden future-oriented transportation policies.”
