Lee Jae-jun, Mayor of Suwon Special City: "Please Devote All Efforts to Establishing an Integrated Defense Posture"
Lee Jae-jun, Mayor of Suwon Special City, presided over the ‘2026 Ulchi Exercise-Linked Suwon City Integrated Defense Council’ at the Disaster and Safety Situation Room of City Hall on the 12th, and urged, “I hope the members of the Integrated Defense Council will devote all their efforts to establishing an integrated defense posture so that the Ulchi Exercise proceeds successfully.”
The meeting was attended by Mayor Lee Jae-jun, who chairs the Integrated Defense Council, Kim Mi-kyung, Chairperson of the Suwon Special City Council, and 19 members of the civilian-government-military-police Integrated Defense Council. It proceeded with a greeting from Mayor Lee Jae-jun, a report on preparations for the 2026 Ulchi Exercise, a report on prior military cooperation matters and agenda items, deliberation of agenda items, and discussion.
Mayor Lee said, “Please do your best to strengthen regional security so that we can respond swiftly and flawlessly to any crisis.”
The Ulchi Exercise is a nationwide comprehensive emergency preparedness drill aimed at protecting the lives and property of citizens in preparation for a wartime emergency.
This year's Ulchi Exercise (UFS-Ulchi Freedom Shield) will be held for four days and three nights from the 18th to the 21st. Its goal is ‘to establish a complete national emergency preparedness posture through the practice of pre-war local provocation and national crisis management and wartime transition procedures, as well as an all-out national war exercise after the outbreak of war.’
Participants include Suwon City, the 3rd Battalion of Army Unit 2819, the Jangan, Gwonseon, Paldal, and Yeongtong Police Stations, the Suwon and Suwon Nambu Fire Stations, the Suwon Detention Center, the Suwon Probation Office, the KEPCO Gyeonggi Headquarters, Samchully City Gas, and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. The exercise organization consists of 21 teams with 580 personnel.
On the morning of the 18th, an Ulchi Level 2 situation will be declared, and the operation of the wartime comprehensive situation room will begin. In the afternoon, an initial situation report meeting will be held, presided over by Suwon Mayor Lee Jae-jun. On the 19th, discussions on wartime budget planning tasks will take place, and on the 20th, following a declaration of war, a civil defense drill for air raid preparedness involving all citizens and a live drill for drone terrorism response (at Suwon Sports Complex) will be conducted. The situation will conclude on the afternoon of the 21st.
