‘dodge’는 ‘재빨리 움직이다, 재빨리 움직여 피하다’라는 의미로 우리말로 피구가 영어로 ‘dodge ball’입니다. 위 대화에서 ‘dodge a bullet’은 직역하면 ‘총알을 피하다’라는 의미인데, ‘(피해 또는 불행/실패 등을) 면하다’라는 의미로 사용됩니다.
Ex) Harold dodged a bullet. He got a “D” on the final exam.
Harold는 최악의 상황은 면했어. 기말고사에서 “D”를 받았거든.
‘Tell me about it.’은 직역하면 ‘나에게 그것에 대해 말해보아라.’이지만, 비 격식적인 표현으로 ‘(같은 경험을 해봤기 때문에) 무슨 말인지 알겠다’라는 의미입니다.
Ex) A: I get so annoyed with Paul. B: Tell me about it. He drives me crazy.
A: Paul 때문에 너무 짜증나. B: 무슨 말인지 알아. 그는 사람 미치게 하잖아.
