‘pass with flying colors’는 통신 수단이 없던 시절 배가 고국의 항구로 들어올 때 승리를 알리기 위해 색색의 깃발을 달아 올린 것에서 유래하였으며, 옛날에는 ‘color’가 ‘기, 깃발’이라는 의미로도 사용되었습니다.
Ex) The test was very difficult, but my daughter passed it with flying colors. 그 시험은 매우 어려웠지만 나의 딸은 우수한 성적으로 합격하였습니다.
‘monkey off one’s back’은 ‘부담을 떨쳐내다’라는 의미로 사용되었으며 ‘마약을 끊다’라는 의미로도 사용됩니다.
Ex) Teenagers should get the monkey off in order to lead a happy and healthy life. 십대들은 행복하고 건강한 삶을 살기 위해 마약을 끊어야 합니다.
