A: Hey, did you hear about what happened to Rick?
B: I sure did, looks like his dreams to become a baseball star went by the wayside.
A: It is a shame, he had such great promise.
B: Yes, but real life issues sometimes come first.
A: He is still young; perhaps after he solves his problems, he can pursue baseball again.
B: I certainly hope so, he's a good guy.

B : 정말 그러길 바래. 그는 좋은 사람이잖아.

‘go by the wayside’는 ‘버림 받다, 방치되다’라는 표현이며 더 급한 일을 처리하기 위해 제쳐둔 것을 의미합니다.
Ex) This case is going by the wayside now. 이 사건은 지금 방치 중이다.
‘promise’는 보통 ‘약속, 약속하다’라는 의미로 흔히 사용되지만 ‘가능성, 장래성, (좋은 일이 있을) 징조’를 또한 나타내기도 합니다.
Ex) His future was full of promise. 그의 미래는 가능성으로 가득 차 있었다.
