A: So have you decided on the car you’re getting?
B: Almost, I still haven’t decided if I want an automatic or a manual drive yet.
A: I see, do you want to put the pedal to the metal or be more cautious driving?
B: Honestly, I’d have to say I like to go fast when driving, but I’m also very lazy.
A: Then that’s a tough call to make, well, let me know you’ve decided.
B: Alright, will do and thanks!
A : 어떤 차를 살지 결정했어?
B : 거의. 자동으로 살지 수동으로 살지는 아직 여전히 결정 못했어.
A : 아, 차를 전속력으로 달리고 싶어? 아니면 좀 더 주의해서 운전하고 싶어?
B : 솔직히 운전할 때 빨리 가고 싶다고 말해야겠지. 하지만 내가 또 무척 게으르거든.
A : 그럼 좀 힘든 결정이겠네. 글쎄, 결정하면 알려 줘.
B : 그래, 그럴게. 고마워.

우리나라에서 자동 변속기 차량을 보통 오토 그리고 수동 변속기 차량을 스틱이라고 부르는데 영어로는 ‘automatic’과 ‘manual (수동의)’을 사용합니다.
‘put the pedal to the metal’은 1950년대부터 사용하던 표현으로 페달을 밟으면 자동차의 연료 조절 판이 활짝 열리면서 속도를 높일 수 있는데 옛날의 자동차 바닥(floorboard)이 보통 금속(metal)으로 만들어 졌었기 때문에 만들어진 표현입니다.
Ex) We’re running late. We need to put the pedal to the metal. 우리 늦었어. 최고 속력을 낼 필요가 있어.
