A: It’s raining again today.
B: Looks like we’ll have to call off the game scheduled for later.
A: I don’t want to cancel it, but I don’t think many of the guys want to play in this kind of weather.
B: Perhaps, we can convince them to play billiards instead.
A: That’s a fantastic idea! You can call them and ask them if they want to go.
B: Hey, wait a minute. Why do I have to do the calling? That’s not fair!
A : 오늘 다시 비가 오고 있어.
B : 이따가 잡힌 경기를 취소해야겠는데.
A : 난 취소하고 싶지 않지만 많은 사람들이 이런 날씨에 경기하고 싶진 않을 것 같아.
B : 아마도 우리 대신 당구를 치자고 설득해 봐야겠어.
A : 멋진 생각인데! 전화를 걸어서 가고 싶은지 한번 물어봐.
B : 이봐, 잠깐. 왜 내가 전화를 걸어야 해? 공평치 않잖아!

‘call off’는 ‘중지하다, 취소하다’의 의미를 가진 동사 구입니다. ‘call off’가 사용된 관용어구로 ‘call off the dog’이 있는데 그 의미는 ‘휴식하다, (비평이나 공격 등을) 멈추다’입니다.
Ex) Tell the sheriff to call off the dogs. We caught the murderer. 보안관에게 추적을 중지하라고 말해요. 우리가 그 살인범을 잡았어요.
‘convince’는 ‘확신시키다, 설득하다’의 의미이며 누군가에게 무언가가 진실임을 확신시킨다는 뉘앙스입니다. 비슷한 의미의 ‘persuade’는 누군가에게 무엇을 하도록 근거를 들어 설득한다는 뜻으로 두 단어는 뉘앙스는 조금 다르지만 종종 동의어처럼 사용되기도 합니다.
Ex) I’ll persuade him to enter the competition. 내가 그를 대회에 나가도록 설득시켜볼게.
