A: Can we buy this new TV?
B: I don't think so son. It costs a pretty penny and your mother and I cannot afford it.
A: Do you think we'll ever be able to buy it?
B: I'm not sure, probably not. We've never spent that much money on entertainment products.
A: Alright, it will be my dream one day to own one!
B: Hey, if you get a job, maybe someday you can buy one.
A : 우리 이 새 TV 살 수 있어요?
B : 사지 못할 것 같구나, 아들아. 상당히 큰 돈이 드는데 엄마와 나는 그럴 여유가 없구나.
A : 언젠가는 살 수 있을까요?
B : 잘 모르겠구나. 아마도 못할 거야. 우린 오락을 위한 물품에 그렇게 큰 돈을 쓴 적이 없어.
A : 알겠어요. 언젠가 그런 TV를 갖는 것이 제 꿈이 될 거에요.
B : 얘야, 네가 직업을 구하면 아마 언젠가 하나 살 수 있을 거야.

‘cost a pretty penny’는 ‘돈이 상당히 들다, 비용이 많이 들다’라는 의미의 관용어구로 비슷한 표현으로는 ‘cost an arm and a leg’ 그리고 ‘cost the earth’가 있습니다.
Ex) At the new shop, whichever you choose, it wouldn’t cost the earth. 그 새로운 상점에서는 무엇을 고르든 비용이 많이 들진 않을 것이다.
‘spend’를 사용하여 ‘~하는 데 (돈/시간)이 들다’라는 표현을 할 수 있는데 시간이 드는 내용으로 명사가 나올 경우 주로 ‘on’을 사용하며 동명사가 나올 경우는 보통 전치사를 쓰지 않습니다.
Ex) She usually spends a lot of time doing her homework. 그녀는 보통 숙제를 하는데 많은 시간이 들입니다.
