A : You didn't show up for dinner last night. Robert was a little upset.
B : I know. I'm awfully sorry.
A : Why didn't you let him know you weren't coming?
B : I couldn't help it. My girlfriend had an accident and was taken to the hospital.
A : Oh, that's terrible. Is she OK?
B : She wasn't hurt badly, but she was shaken up.
A : 너 어제 저녁 먹는데 안 왔더라. Robert 조금 화 났어.
B : 알아. 너무 미안해.
A : 왜 Robert에게 안 온다고 알려주지 않았어?
B : 어쩔 수 없었어. 내 여자친구가 사고가 나서 병원으로 실려갔어.
A : 오, 안됐구나. 그녀는 괜찮아?
B : 심하게 다치진 않았는데 조금 충격을 받았어.

‘cannot help ~’는 ‘~하지 않을 수 없다’라는 의미이고 ‘cannot help’ 뒤에는 명사의 형태가 나와야 하므로 동사의 의미가 필요할 때에는 동명사로 바꾸어서 사용합니다. 대명사 ‘it’이 목적어로 자주 사용됩니다.
Ex) We couldn’t help laughing out loud throughout the play. 우리는 연극 내내 배꼽을 잡고 웃었다.
‘shake somebody up’은 ‘충격을 주다, 동요하게 하다’라는 관용표현입니다. 위의 대화에서 ‘somebody’인 ‘she’가 주어로 사용되었기 때문에 동사가 수동형이 되었습니다.
능동) The accident shook her up. 그 사고는 그녀를 충격을 주었다.
