Suwon Media Center Hosts 'Suwon Colored with Light' Exhibition
The Suwon Media Center of the Suwon Cultural Foundation (CEO Kwak Do-yong) will run a university-collaboration media convergence content planning exhibition, '2026 Suwon Colored with Light – AI Digital, Drawing the Artist,' from the 14th to the 30th, together with the Department of Media & Entertainment at Kyung Hee University Graduate School.
This exhibition was organized to link the university's research and creative capabilities with the infrastructure held by the Media Center, providing graduate students with hands-on creative experience in planning and realizing their works in an actual exhibition space.
The most notable feature of this collaboration is that the students' ideas do not remain confined to classrooms or studios, but are realized as works in a cultural space visited by citizens.
The exhibition features nine multinational media art artists who are graduate students at Kyung Hee University from Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam, China, and elsewhere (Yoo Dong-seok, LUI UEN WA, NIU YINGXUE, YANG LINFEI, Yoo Su-min, Jung Seong-gyeong, SONG XIAOJIA, Joo Si-won, HUYNH THI VAN AN), along with faculty members (Department Chair Lee Eun-hye and Professors Kim Bo-seong, Kang Kyung-ho, and Kim Na-rae). Using the hanok space of the Suwon Media Center, they plan to design, produce, and exhibit a total of 12 works across five concepts.
Through inter-institutional cooperation, students will be given field-oriented project education opportunities, such as showcasing their works in an actual exhibition space and receiving feedback from visitors. The Suwon Media Center, likewise, plans to move away from securing content through reliance on outsourced production, and by utilizing the university's creative research and creative capabilities, present experimental content reflecting the latest technology to citizens and tourists.
This exhibition focuses on combining the history and culture of 'Suwon' and the works of local artists with media technology to expand them into new content.
For this collaboration, the works of artist Choi Kyung-ja, who has been active in Suwon, are used to expand the symbols, emotions, textures, and movements contained in the artist's paintings into media art, presenting various works centered on five concepts: 'Gasina,' 'Tiger and Magpie,' 'Ceramics and Dancing People,' 'Mirror and Ramie Patchwork,' and 'Coloring.' The images, colors, narratives, and spatiality of the works are analyzed and combined with digital technology, and light, movement, video, and spatial staging are added to static paintings to realize them as a new form of content.
An official of the Suwon Cultural Foundation said, "This project is a cooperation model that creates new content by bringing together the space and infrastructure of public institutions, the creative talents of universities, and the cultural resources of local artists," adding, "We will expand inter-institutional cooperation so that students can be given opportunities to present their works to citizens, the center can secure new content, and the works of local artists can be delivered to more citizens through media technology."
