Suwon Metropolitan City Pays 13.395 Billion Won in Military Noise Damage Compensation

Suwon Metropolitan City (Mayor Lee Jae-joon) will sequentially pay compensation totaling 13.395 billion won to 48,672 residents affected by military noise near Suwon Air Base (K-13).

In accordance with the Military Noise Compensation Act, the city received compensation applications in January and February, and after calculation and review, notified the initial decision in May. After operating an objection filing period from June 1 to July 30, the city determined 48,672 as compensation recipients.

For 48,600 recipients who agreed with the initial decision, the first payment of compensation will be made by August 31. For 72 objection filers, compensation will be paid in the second round by October 30 after going through the consent process for the objection results.

Compensation is to be paid by principle to the account under the name of the applicant or the representative heir if the applicant has passed away. Cash payment is possible if there are unavoidable circumstances under applicable laws.

Residents who failed to apply for compensation this year may retroactively file applications for unpaid amounts from previous years, including 2025, during the application period from January to February 2027. Residents in noise countermeasure areas must apply for compensation annually.

A Suwon City official said, "We hope the compensation will provide some comfort to residents who have endured military noise damage for a long time" and "We will do our best to alleviate residents' grievances caused by military noise and ensure fair compensation."
