Uiwang City Council holds communication meeting with youth participation committee
Uiwang City Council in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 20th that it held a 'communication meeting with the Uiwang City Youth Participation Committee' to reflect the authentic voices of local youth in municipal administration and share democratic values.
The meeting held on the 19th was attended by Council Chair Seo Chang-soo, five city council members, and 14 student representatives from the Uiwang City Youth Participation Committee.
During the meeting, they engaged in candid discussions about local issues experienced by youth and sought practical policy alternatives.
The event proceeded as a program allowing youth to directly experience the roles and functions of local councils. Participants toured key facilities including the main assembly hall, small conference rooms, and medium conference rooms, examined spaces where actual decision-making occurs, and deepened their understanding of overall legislative activities including the council operating system and ordinance-making processes.
In particular, this event added significance by departing from the existing passive participation format, providing a presentation time where youth participation committee representatives directly introduced their activities and achievements. Student representatives provided detailed explanations of community issues from a youth perspective and activities undertaken to address them.
During the subsequent question-and-answer and proposal session, youth representatives actively proposed community issues and improvement measures they had felt and engaged in animated discussions. Students presented ideas including expanding cultural and welfare infrastructure for youth and expanding communication with the council.
In response, council members empathized with the shortage of spaces for 'rest' and 'play' and promised to reflect the proposals in policies.
The city council plans to expand communication channels with various segments of society and implement an 'open council' and 'communicative legislative activities' that all citizens can experience.
Council Chair Seo Chang-soo stated, "In the sight of future leaders, youth, taking direct interest in municipal administration and presenting creative opinions, I could see a bright future for Uiwang City," and added, "I will do my best to ensure that the precious opinions proposed at today's meeting do not end as mere suggestions but lead to actual ordinance enactment and budget allocations."
