Suwon conducts full inspection of 474 heat-wave shelters
[Suwon Ilbo=Kang Han-seo] Suwon City announced on the 8th that it conducted a full inspection of 474 heat-wave shelters in the city, including senior centers, to check their management status.
To minimize damage from extreme heat waves, the city formed a 100-member inspection team consisting of members of the local autonomous disaster prevention units and conducted inspections from the 2nd to the 8th for seven days at heat-wave shelters such as senior welfare centers and senior centers.
The inspection team focused on checking the normal operation of cooling facilities at heat-wave shelters, the placement of caution notices regarding heat-wave precautions, and cleanliness, while also listening to the difficulties of elderly residents.
The city designates and operates 474 locations including senior welfare centers, senior centers, and dong administrative welfare centers as 'heat-wave shelters.' Anyone can visit and rest at a heat-wave shelter at any time.
Meanwhile, the Suwon City Local Autonomous Disaster Prevention Unit, which was launched in 2010, is a private organization that participates in surveillance activities in disaster-vulnerable areas and emergency recovery volunteer activities for disasters such as earthquakes and floods.
Jo Jin-haeng, director of the Citizen Safety Division, said, "The city will continuously inspect and manage heat-wave shelters together with the local autonomous disaster prevention unit to prevent safety accidents caused by extreme heat waves," and added, "We will establish a system that can proactively respond to disasters for citizen safety."
