Osan City Upgrades Bicycle Insurance for Residents

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] Osan City has upgraded its municipal bicycle insurance to allow residents to use bicycles with greater peace of mind.

The city has enrolled and operated bicycle insurance since 2014, but like other local governments, it previously paid consolation funds (100,000 to 500,000 won) only when a bicycle accident resulted in a diagnosis of four weeks or more.

In response, Osan City has renewed its bicycle insurance to be the first in the nation to provide medical expense coverage of up to 2 million won (excluding a 500,000 won deductible) regardless of the diagnostic period.

Additionally, the insurance provides comprehensive coverage including bicycle accident fatality (10 million won), residual disability (up to 10 million won), bicycle accident fines (up to 20 million won), and attorney retention fees (2 million won; excluding fatalities for those under 15 years old and excluding accident fines and attorney fees for those under 14 years old). Accident reports and insurance inquiries can be made through the Osan Citizen Bicycle Insurance Compensation Center (1666-4912).

A city official stated, "Our priority is creating a safe bicycle usage environment so residents do not suffer injuries, and we will do our utmost to ensure residents can receive insurance benefits in case of unforeseen accidents."
