Suwon Appoints 14 Members to 4th Human Rights Committee
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] Suwon held the "4th Suwon Human Rights Committee Member Appointment Ceremony" at City Hall on the 21st and appointed 14 people as committee members. Their term of office is two years.
The 4th Suwon Human Rights Committee members are composed of citizens, city council members, civic group members, and human rights experts. The 4th Suwon Human Rights Committee elected attorney Jang Seong-geun as chairperson and Professor Ju Kyung-hee of Hanshin University as vice chairperson at the ceremony.
The human rights committee members decided to participate in a "human rights impact assessment of polling stations" targeting all polling places in the city as Suwon prepares for the 21st National Assembly elections.
Human rights impact assessment is a system that examines and evaluates the impact of public facilities, policies, and local ordinances on citizens' human rights.
The human rights committee members deliberate and advise on ▲establishment of basic human rights policy plans, establishment, implementation, and evaluation of annual implementation plans ▲operation of the Suwon Human Rights Center ▲human rights violation complaint cases ▲matters concerning human rights impact assessments ▲consultations with human rights-related organizations and citizen participation, and make recommendations to the mayor on matters necessary for ensuring and promoting citizens' human rights.
An official from the City Human Rights Division said, "The committee is composed of capable human rights members who will resolve local human rights issues from the perspective of citizens," and "The Suwon Human Rights Committee will play a significant role in creating a happy human rights city of Suwon where all citizens are respected."
The city's human rights committee was established in November 2013. Suwon established a human rights team in 2013, enacted human rights ordinances, organized a human rights committee, and laid the foundation for a "human rights city." In May 2015, it opened a human rights center dedicated to human rights remedies. In January 2019, it established a human rights division, completing the "institutionalization of human rights administration."
