[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] As confirmed COVID-19 cases have surged recently in the Seoul metropolitan area, Yeongdeungpo District in Suwon City has launched intensive disinfection efforts to ease resident anxiety and prevent the spread of infectious disease.

On the 25th, the district formed a joint public-private disinfection team comprised of district and neighborhood office staff, the Yeongdeungpo District Women's Volunteer Civil Defense Corps, the Gumaetan Market Merchants Association, and the Maetan 1-dong Organizations Council. The team conducted disinfection at Gumaetan Market, commercial areas around Ajou University intersection, and residential areas near Woojoo Town.

The disinfection operation deployed one disinfection vehicle (one-ton truck), 50 sprayers, and 15 spray bottles. Despite the severe heat, participants meticulously disinfected various disease-vulnerable areas including commercial building entrances to prevent COVID-19 spread. Kim Min-ja, head of the Women's Volunteer Civil Defense Corps, stated, "As guardians of community safety, we participated to be of help to residents' living safety," and added, "These are difficult times, but I hope we can all join forces to overcome this crisis."

Meanwhile, the district's autonomous disinfection teams formed by residents in each neighborhood are collaborating with the district's disinfection support team to conduct regular disinfection activities focusing on crowded multipurpose facilities and public institutions.

Song Young-wan, head of Yeongdeungpo District Office, said, "This week is the critical turning point for COVID-19 resurgence, so we will do our utmost in thorough disinfection and prevention efforts," and urged, "Residents are also asked to strictly follow quarantine guidelines such as wearing masks and practicing social distancing."
