Suwon Agricultural and Fishery Products Wholesale Market Completes Phase 3 Facility Modernization Project
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Jeong Joon-sung] The Suwon Agricultural and Fishery Products Wholesale Market has completed its facility modernization project Phase 3 after 4 years and 5 months and fully reopened on the 4th.
The Suwon Agricultural and Fishery Products Wholesale Market initiated auctions at the newly constructed vegetable building on that morning and announced its full opening.
To ensure the agricultural and fishery products wholesale market could continue normal operations during construction, the city carried out the facility modernization project over 3 phases using a ‘phased circulation development method’ (partially demolishing existing buildings and reconstructing them, with shops sequentially moving into completed buildings).
In November 2017, Phase 1 construction began on building 2 temporary markets where vegetable building tenants would be located, completing in June 2018. Phase 2 construction for newly constructing and relocating the fruit and fishery buildings was completed in September 2021.
Phase 3 construction for newly constructing and relocating the vegetable building was recently completed, with all merchants moving in on April 3rd. Direct sales and logistics building construction has been completed, with the entire project expected to finish by the end of June.
The radish and Chinese cabbage market previously located in temporary buildings near the existing wholesale market has been relocated to Vegetable Building 1, and the packaged vegetable market has moved into Vegetable Building 2.
The Suwon Agricultural and Fishery Products Wholesale Market, which opened in February 1993, has served as a hub for agricultural and fishery product distribution in the southwestern Gyeonggi region, but has faced difficulties since the mid-2000s due to aging facilities and declining visitor numbers.
It was selected for the ‘Facility Modernization Competition Project’ overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in 2013, and began the facility modernization project with support from national funds.
The Suwon Agricultural and Fishery Products Wholesale Market will be constructed with a site area of 56,160㎡, total building floor area of 50,830㎡, and 6 buildings with 1 basement level and 3 above-ground floors.
The basement level houses a parking lot and low-temperature logistics system. The first floor accommodates the fruit building, fishery building, vegetable buildings 1 and 2, onion auction house, and direct sales and specialized logistics building. The second floor has administrative offices, and the third floor has visitor convenience facilities.
