Suwon City to Install Emergency Evacuation Facilities in Underground Underpasses
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Jung Jun-sung] Suwon Special City announced on the 31st that it will install emergency evacuation handrails and ladders in underground underpasses with high flooding risk to prepare for sudden inundation of underground underpasses.
The city plans to install emergency evacuation handrails (total length of 1,520m) and ladders (16 locations) in four underground underpasses—Hwasan Underground Underpass, Jangan Underground Underpass, Gosaek Underground Underpass, and Maeyeoul Underground Underpass—during September.
When flooding accidents occur due to unpredictable heavy downpours, vehicle drivers can hold onto the handrails installed on the walls of the underground underpass and move to the nearest emergency ladder, climb up, and evacuate outside the underground underpass.
A city official said, "Many citizens are anxious due to recent casualties from underground underpass flooding accidents," and added, "To prepare for unpredictable disasters, we will install facilities that will help with evacuation when emergencies occur."
