Suwon City Rolls Up Sleeves to Track Down High-Value Tax Delinquents

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Jung Jun-sung] Suwon Special City is taking action to track down high-value tax delinquents.

The city announced on the 26th that it operates a 'tax collection mobile unit' year-round that intensively tracks high-value delinquents and chronic delinquent vehicles (unregistered vehicles) to collect outstanding tax amounts.

Starting in early October, the tax collection mobile unit has conducted home searches targeting habitual high-value delinquents who intentionally evade payment through asset concealment and sham divorces. Following preliminary fact-finding investigations to confirm actual residency, the unit conducted surprise dawn raids and, when occupants refused to open doors, forced entry with police present.

As a result, the unit has identified 15 high-value delinquents to date and collected 60 million won in cash, while seizing seven items including precious metals of recoverable value on-site. Additionally, two parcels of tax security are scheduled to have their delinquent amounts collected through public sale.

Since April, the tax collection mobile unit investigated 187 suspected unregistered vehicles using big data including liability insurance registration, identified 17 vehicles, and collected 11 million won through public sale disposal and other measures. For 669 chronic delinquent vehicles, the unit collected 183 million won through delinquency proceedings and sustained collection efforts.

The tax collection mobile unit is researching new collection techniques for large trust open-market stores (outlets, shopping towns, etc.).

In the case of large trust open-market stores (outlets, shopping towns, etc.), to resolve the problem that public sales are impossible due to individual store divisions not being clearly separated, the unit is reviewing auction precedents, private transactions, and recent court rulings while maintaining continuous coordination with the Korea Asset Management Corporation. Through these efforts, the unit has collected 87 million won since August.

The successful public sale case was recognized for its excellence at the 2023 Gyeonggi Province Capacity Enhancement Best Practices Presentation Conference, receiving the provincial governor's award. With this award, Suwon City has received the provincial governor's award for four consecutive years.
