Jung Jeom-sik: "Is the intent to extend your term through constitutional amendment and delay trials?"

Jung Jeom-sik, floor leader of the People Power Party, said on the 8th, "There will be no constitutional amendment during this administration" and stated, "We will never discuss constitutional amendment with forces attempting to serve private interests through it." He also said the party will consider the full abolition of early voting and extending the period of the main voting day.

Floor Leader Jung made these remarks during a speech on behalf of the negotiating group at the plenary session of the National Assembly, saying, "The current administration and ruling party's top national agenda is the president's self-exoneration."

Regarding President Lee Jae-myung's mention of a two-term constitutional amendment, Jung stated, "He never says 'I won't run for reelection' or 'I will stand trial'" and asked, "Could the intent be to extend his term through a constitutional amendment and thereby delay trials?"

Floor Leader Jung criticized the government and ruling party by citing that Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won served as co-chair of a Democratic Party group advocating for withdrawal of charges against the president, as well as the Democratic Party's introduction of a special counsel bill for charge withdrawal. He also argued that the increase of Supreme Court justices and the President's Office's request for the reappointment of a Supreme Court justice constitute undermining judicial independence.

He then urged the judiciary, stating "The judiciary's honor and pride are upheld only by fulfilling its original duties," and called for the immediate resumption of five trials involving President Lee.

Regarding electoral systems, Jung pointed to the shortage of ballots during the June 3rd local elections and said, "We will properly monitor the lax and arrogant National Election Commission." He also announced plans to consider the full abolition of early voting and the extension of the main voting period.

Regarding the planned abolition of the prosecution's supplementary investigation authority in October, he said, "Distortion of the judicial system leads to poor investigations, and poor investigations will result in suffering for the people," and announced plans to pursue the reinstatement of supplementary investigation authority.

On real estate policy, he proposed expanding housing supply through the abolition of regulations on private redevelopment and reconstruction, and easing the tax burden on single-household homeowners. For first-time homebuyers among youth and newlyweds, he promised acquisition tax exemptions and ultra-low interest rate loan support.

Regarding single-stock leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs), he claimed investment losses are estimated at over 54 to 56 trillion won and demanded a state investigation and special inspection probe. He stressed the need to clarify whether there was pressure from those in power during the product introduction process and the circumstances of its launch right before the local elections.

He also criticized government-led semiconductor cluster investment in Honam. Regarding the amended labor union law known as the "yellow envelope bill," he said the ruling party will revise it in a direction that clarifies the primary contractor's employer status and scope of negotiations.

On fiscal and pension policy, he said the government will prioritize using excess tax revenues for repaying national debt and will strengthen the independence and expertise of the National Pension Fund Management Committee. He added that the system reducing old-age pensions based on earned income will also be abolished.
