Lee Chang-dong Wins Jury Prize at Venice Film Festival with 'A Possible Love'...Comeback After 24 Years

Director Lee Chang-dong's new film 'A Possible Love' has won the Jury Prize (Silver Lion) at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. This marks his return to a major prize at Venice 24 years after winning the Best Director award for 'Oasis' in 2002.

On September 12 (local time), the director held an official press conference at Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido in Venice, Italy, raising questions about cinema and communication.

He said, "We are in an era when filmmakers' concerns are deepening," adding, "As people find it difficult to gather in theaters and the relationships shared through film are breaking apart, we cannot help but worry about what kind of films to make. At such a time, I want to meet audiences more deeply," he expressed his sentiments.

The award-winning film 'A Possible Love' explores the possibility of relationships and empathy in today's disconnected society. It meticulously captures the fractures and conflicts in life that unfold when Ho-seok (played by Sul Kyung-gu), a laid-off worker, and his wife Mi-ok (played by Jeon Do-yeon), along with documentary filmmaker Ye-ji (played by Cho Yeo-jeong) and her husband Sang-woo (played by Cho Jin-sung), meet through documentary production.

The film received critical acclaim from local critics following its festival premiere. In addition to winning the Jury Prize in the competition section, it also simultaneously won the International Federation of Film Critics Award (FIPRESCI) presented by foreign press members.

Director Lee Chang-dong's seventh feature film 'A Possible Love', unveiled 8 years after 'Burning' (2018), will premiere in domestic theaters on September 23 and will be streamed worldwide through Netflix on November 6.
