Gyeonggi Province Secures Record 95.8 Billion Won in Government Funding for Border Area Projects
The government funding secured for the border area development project aimed at promoting growth in northern Gyeonggi's border regions has reached a record 95.8 billion won for 2027. This represents an increase of 31.6 billion won compared to the previous year, and the province evaluated it as a success of its efforts to secure government funding.
According to Gyeonggi Province on the 16th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety formally notified the province on the 15th of the government budget plan containing these details.
Looking at the border area government funding projects analyzed by Gyeonggi Province, 77.8 billion won has been allocated for the 'Special Situation Area Development Project' to improve living conditions in underdeveloped areas, representing a 37.7% increase compared to 56.5 billion won in 2026.
The 'Border Region Development Support Project,' which supports the broad development and growth of border areas, also reflected 18.1 billion won for 2027, showing a sharp increase of 132.7% compared to 7.8 billion won in 2026.
The province explained that these budget plans are comprehensive subsidy projects under the national Regional Balance Development Special Account, and the total amount will remain unchanged during the National Assembly's review process, meaning that the government funding support for next year is effectively confirmed.
Looking at the details, the Special Situation Area Development Project budget will be invested in resident-oriented projects including △expansion of basic living infrastructure △increase of regional income △improvement of regional landscape and △strengthening of resident capacity. Nine new projects for 2027 were selected, including 'Gapyeong County Transportation Hub Bus Public Depot Construction' and 'Yeoncheon Jungkokri Remains Complex Utilization Foundation Project.' The total number of projects to be pursued is 44.
The Border Region Development Support Project budget will be invested in △promoting ecology and peace tourism △improving living conditions △establishing balanced development foundations and △creating inter-Korean exchange and cooperation infrastructure. Representative projects include a total of 10 projects, such as the 'Pyeongwharo Street Environment Improvement Project,' a collaborative project among Yangju City, Dongducheon City, and Yeoncheon County, and the 'Hantangang Area Themed Border Hub Development Project,' a collaborative project between Pocheon City and Yeoncheon County. A total of four new projects for 2027 have been confirmed, including 'Pocheon City Cheongseongsan Comprehensive Development Project.'
Jo Jang-seok, director of the Balanced Development Planning Bureau, said, "This secured government funding will serve as seed money for creating new growth momentum in border areas that have faced poor development conditions and bringing about tangible changes that residents can experience in their daily lives," adding, "Going forward, we will work in cooperation with the government and local governments to steadily pursue balanced development and sustained growth in the northern Gyeonggi region."
Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mi-ae has continued her efforts to secure government funding by meeting with Planning and Budget Minister Park Hong-geun in July and National Assembly Budget and Accounts Committee Chairman Lee Gwang-jae on September 10, explaining the necessity of major provincial projects and requesting increased government funding and support for reflection. Separately, Gyeonggi Province held a 'Briefing Session on Major 2027 Government-Funded Projects for Gyeonggi Province' in July at the National Assembly, hosted by First Vice Governor Kim Sung-joong, targeting aides of lawmakers from the province's constituencies, continuing efforts to secure government funding for next year.
