80 Additional Intercity Buses Added for Chuseok Holiday in Gyeonggi Province…Special Transportation Measures Implemented
Gyeonggi Province will deploy an additional 80 buses across 40 intercity routes and increase daily service frequencies by 120 trips to support the movement of residents traveling home and returning during the Chuseok holiday period. Urban railways including the Uijeongbu Light Rail Transit, Hanam Line, and Byeolnae Line will extend late-night service through September 26-27 when returning travelers are expected to be heaviest.
Gyeonggi Province designated September 23-27 as the "2026 Chuseok Holiday Special Transportation Period" and announced on the 22nd that it will implement measures to expand mass transit capacity, distribute traffic flow, provide real-time traffic information, and enhance road safety management.
First, intercity buses will add 80 vehicles across 40 routes and increase daily service frequencies by 120 trips. City buses and village buses will also operate flexibly, extending the last departure time by up to one hour depending on demand and local conditions in each municipality. The province plans to encourage expanded taxi operations around transportation facilities such as terminals where passenger volumes are expected to increase during the holiday period.
Urban railways will extend late-night service from September 26-27 when returning travelers are expected to be concentrated. The Uijeongbu Light Rail Transit and Line 5 Hanam Line, Line 8 Byeolnae Line will operate until 1:00 a.m. the next day, while the Line 7 Bucheon section will operate until 2:00 a.m. the next day.
Real-time alternative route information will also be provided to reduce road congestion. When traffic congestion occurs on major highways including the Gyeongbu, Yeongdong, West Coast, Jungang, and Seoul-Yangyang expressways, variable message signs (VMS) will guide drivers to nearby alternative roads such as Local Road 311 and entrance ramp control information.
National roads will also provide alternative route information based on congestion conditions on Routes 1, 3, 39, 42, and 45 in southern Gyeonggi and Routes 3, 6, 43, and 47 in northern Gyeonggi, directing drivers to nearby alternative roads such as Local Road 309.
Bus operation information can be checked through the Gyeonggi Bus Information app, website (www.gbis.go.kr), and automated phone service (1688-8031). Congestion conditions, faster routes, and real-time incident information including traffic accidents and road closures on major roads can be obtained through the Gyeonggi Traffic Information Center website (gits.gg.go.kr), mobile web, and traffic information hotline (1688-9090).
Road safety management will also be reinforced during the holiday period. The province will inspect drainage facilities and remove debris from bridges on local roads and nationally-supported local roads in 15 municipalities and cities, as well as maintain roads. To prepare for road erosion or damage, repair teams will be assigned and emergency repair companies will be designated by region to enable quick recovery in case of emergencies.
In case of heavy autumn rainfall or typhoons, the province and municipalities will activate emergency communication networks to monitor bus rerouting and other operational conditions, and provide real-time updates through the Gyeonggi Bus Information app. Pre-planned bus alternative routes will be in place for chronically flooded sections, and safety measures including vehicle access control and towing will be implemented at parking areas along levees depending on weather conditions.
Yun Tae-wan, director of Gyeonggi Province's Transportation Bureau, said, "We will do our best to ensure that residents visiting their hometowns during the Chuseok holiday can travel safely and conveniently through mass transit and road safety management," and added, "Since this is a period when traffic is concentrated, we ask for active cooperation in safe driving and compliance with traffic laws."
