Kangju-ri Solo Exhibition 'Phantom' Held at Youngong Space in Suwon [Culture S]

Youngong Space, an exhibition venue located in Uman-dong, Suwon, will host artist Kangju-ri's solo exhibition 《Phantom》 from October 8 to 24, 2026. This exhibition presents new works from 2026, in which the artist discusses drawing and the imagination that extends from it, as well as reality and illusion.

The exhibition will feature series such as 《Another Being》 and 《Drawing Out》, works created with ink on paper panels. Youngong Space describes these series as "works that reveal the moment of transformation and gaps in perception in the process of drawing out another form latent within the subject."

Regarding Kangju-ri, Youngong Space introduced the artist as someone who "has consistently pursued painting and installation work centered on basic materials such as paper and ink, building her own unique visual language." Since 2024, the artist has collaborated with Korean hanji artisans in Jeonju on paper-based works.

Kangju-ri stated, "This solo exhibition 《Phantom》 focuses on the act of drawing and the virtual reasoning and ownership that derive from it, rather than on the question of what to draw. Drawing is the first step from the existence of reality to the world of imagination."

Kangju-ri studied studio art at the Boston Museum School of Tufts University and, following her receipt of the Massachusetts Cultural Division Artist Award in the United States, was selected as the Korean representative for the Glenfiddich Artist in Residence program in the UK. She has participated in solo and curated exhibitions at The Reference, Space Willing and Dealing, and Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, and her works are held in the collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea and the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation.

Youngong Space is a venue that opened in February 2026, with exhibitions held at 2nd Floor, 37-1, Segi-ro 421-beon-gil, Paldal-gu, Suwon. Operating hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., with closure every Sunday to Tuesday. The opening will take place on October 8 at 6 p.m., and an artist talk will be held on October 14 at 6 p.m. This exhibition is sponsored by the Suwon Metropolitan City and the Suwon Cultural Foundation, and was selected for the 2026 Suwon Cultural Foundation Cultural and Arts Creation Support program.
