'Courtyard Marriott Pyeongtaek' Wins Grand Prize at Gyeonggi Province Architecture Awards...74 Winning Works Selected
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 29th that it has selected 74 winning works for the '31st Gyeonggi Province Architecture Culture Award' after undergoing screening by the Gyeonggi Architecture Culture Festival Promotion Committee. Winners include Courtyard Marriott Pyeongtaek.
The Gyeonggi Province Architecture Culture Award is a public competition that discovers and honors outstanding buildings in Gyeonggi Province and future architectural ideas. It is divided into two categories: the 'usage approval division,' which evaluates completed buildings, and the 'planning division,' which evaluates design ideas from students and other aspiring architects.
The usage approval division targeted buildings in Gyeonggi Province that received usage approval between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2025.
For 'Courtyard Marriott Pyeongtaek,' which won the grand prize, the judges highly praised the building for solving challenging topography and legal constraints through geometric sectional planning while creating a functional hotel space harmonizing with the natural environment. 'Courtyard Marriott Pyeongtaek' was designed by Jung Rim Architects & Engineers and constructed by Tracon Construction, with the building owner being Dongsseung Hotel & Resort.
Four works were selected for the gold prize: 'Unjeong Danurim Elderly and Disabled Welfare Center' in Paju, 'Yangpyeong County Sports Center,' 'Gumi-dong Seongnam Waterlight Garden,' and KG Memorial Hall 'Jagangheon.' Four works were selected for the silver prize including 'Seoun-myeon Administrative Welfare Center in Anseong City,' 'Café Montblanc Residential Use,' 'Muneonga,' and 'Pungeunjae.'
For the planning division, which was conducted with the theme 'The Healing Boundary: DMZ (Demilitarized Zone),' the grand prize was awarded to Soonchunhyang University student Yeum Mir's 'Unfinished Return: Remains Interment Facility for Unidentified Korean War Casualties.' The judges highly evaluated the work for addressing the theme 'The Healing Boundary: DMZ' through spatial planning that considered temporality and sense of place.
The gold prize was awarded to Sahmyook University students Seo Jeong-bin and Kim Dam-yoon for 'Hwapeong Map: Erasing the Surface of Confrontation and Drawing Peace.' The silver prizes were awarded to three works: 'FOR : REST' by Soonchunhyang University student Kim Min-gyu, 'From Root to Horizon' by Yeungnam University students Lee Ji-sook, Kim Dong-sun, and Kim Ki-tae, and 'DMZ-119' by Soonchunhyang University student Cho Min-seo.
Through this screening, a total of 41 works were selected in the usage approval division: 9 principal prizes, 14 special prizes, and 18 honorable mentions. In the planning division, 33 works were selected: 5 principal prizes, 14 special prizes, 7 selections, and 7 honorable mentions.
The awards ceremony will take place on October 24 at 2 p.m. at the 'Forest of Wisdom' in the Asia Publishing Culture Information Center in Paju, coinciding with the opening ceremony of the '14th Gyeonggi Architecture Culture Festival with Paju City.' The winning works will be displayed at the same venue from October 23 to 25.
Kang Gil-soon, Director of the Architectural Policy Division at Gyeonggi Province, stated: "We were able to confirm outstanding buildings that embody the public nature and cultural value of architecture, as well as diverse proposals from young architects who have reinterpreted the boundary and memory of the demilitarized zone as spaces for healing and coexistence. We hope that the awarded works will serve as an opportunity to enhance the dignity of Gyeonggi Province's architectural culture and expand new architectural possibilities."
