Mayors of Yongin and Seongnam Forge United Front...October 1 Joint Resolution to Reflect Gyeonggi Southern Megacity Railway in National Project

Yongin Special City Mayor Lee Sang-il will hold a joint resolution rally with Seongnam City Mayor Shin Sang-jin on October 1 at Daejang-geun Neighborhood Park in Daejang-dong, Seongnam, to urge the reflection of the Gyeonggi Southern Megacity Railway in the Fifth National Railroad Network Construction Plan, and will announce the position to be conveyed to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The resolution rally, hosted by Mayors Lee and Shin, will also be attended by representatives from four cities and citizens from the four municipalities participating in the Gyeonggi Southern Megacity Railway Promotion Citizens Alliance (Yongin, Seongnam, Suwon, and Hwaseong).

The event follows a September 3 request from citizens to Mayor Lee, asking that the relevant cities make greater efforts to ensure the Gyeonggi Southern Megacity Railway is reflected in the Fifth National Railroad Network Construction Plan.

At that meeting, Mayor Lee contacted Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin to propose a joint statement, and Mayor Shin expressed his approval.

On October 1, Mayor Lee and Mayor Shin plan to explain the economic viability and necessity of the project to about 20 officials, including representatives from the Citizens Alliance of the four Gyeonggi Southern cities (Yongin, Seongnam, Suwon, and Hwaseong), and will urge the inclusion of the project in the national railroad network plan.

Mayor Lee will emphasize once again that the construction of the Gyeonggi Southern Megacity Railway must be reflected in the Fifth National Railroad Network Construction Plan in order to consolidate the will of 4.2 million citizens from Yongin, Seongnam, Suwon, and Hwaseong, resolve citizens' transit inconveniences, and smoothly promote the national semiconductor project.

Mayor Lee plans to sign a joint petition urging the construction of the Gyeonggi Southern Megacity Railway alongside Mayor Shin and four joint representatives from each local government in the Citizens Alliance.

Through the joint petition, Mayor Lee and others plan to request △the reflection of the Gyeonggi Southern Megacity Railway construction in the Fifth National Railroad Network Construction Plan △active promotion of national strategic infrastructure supporting future industries such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI) △rapid administrative support from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and related agencies.

The Gyeonggi Southern Megacity Railway, which Mayor Lee has been leading since his second term of popular election, is a 50.7-kilometer railroad construction project connecting Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Arena Station to Seocho Station, Pangyo in Seongnam, Shinbong and Seongbok-dong in Yongin, Gwanggyo in Suwon, and Bongdam in Hwaseong.
