Provincial Assembly Speaker Nam Meets DP Leader Kim to Request Enactment of Local Assembly Law This Year

Nam Jong-seop, Speaker of the Gyeonggi Province Provincial Assembly (Democratic Party, Yongin District 3), met with Kim Min-seok, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, at the National Assembly and requested party-level cooperation for the prompt enactment of the "Local Assembly Law," according to an announcement made on the 2nd.

Speaker Nam, who serves as chairman of the Council of Mayors and Governors of South Korea, visited the office of the Democratic Party leader at the National Assembly on the afternoon of the 1st to explain to Kim the necessity of enacting the Local Assembly Law.

The meeting was attended by Park Jong-hyuk, secretary general of the Council of Mayors and Governors (Speaker of Incheon Metropolitan Assembly), Ahn Shin-il, Speaker of the Sejong Special Autonomous City Assembly, Shin Min-ho, chairman of the National Council of Provincial Assembly Operating Committees, Kim Hyun-mi, secretary general of the Operating Committee Council, and Choi Jong-hyun, head of the Gyeonggi Province Provincial Assembly's Local Assembly Law Enactment Promotion Task Force, among others.

The attendees conveyed that the will of the National Assembly is important for the prompt review and processing of the Local Assembly Law. In particular, they requested the Democratic Party's interest and cooperation to ensure enactment within this year.

According to the attendees, Leader Kim expressed agreement with the necessity of enacting the Local Assembly Law within this year and promised active cooperation at the party level to enable legislation.

Speaker Nam stated, "The Local Assembly Law has already been proposed multiple times to the National Assembly, but what is now important is to translate the discussion into actual legislation. Since local assemblies across the country are united in this cause, we hope the party will lend its strength to the enactment of this law."

Meanwhile, Speaker Nam plans to hold a "National Local Assembly Members Convention" bringing together basic and metropolitan council members from across the country at the National Assembly on October 27th to urge the prompt enactment of the Local Assembly Law.
