Uiwang City's Distinctive Sister City Relations…Strengthening Mutual Cooperation Through Festivals and Regional Specialties
Uiwang City (Mayor Kim Sung-je) is expanding the scope of its domestic sister city exchanges beyond formal administrative cooperation to result-oriented exchanges that provide tangible benefits to citizens.
First, the city consistently maintains exchanges by attending the flagship festivals of sister cities. From September 4 to 5 this year, Vice Mayor An Chi-gwon led a delegation to the Goesan Red Pepper Festival and the Muju Firefly Festival, strengthening friendship between sister cities and broadening avenues for cooperation.
In particular, cooperation with Muju County is a representative example of long-standing exchanges. Since establishing their sister city relationship in May 2012, Uiwang City and Muju County have consistently promoted youth exchanges, and mutual exchanges are ongoing through the regular dispatch of delegations to each city's flagship festivals annually.
This year's Baekun Lake Festival presented symbolic scenes reflecting such cooperative momentum. At the 22nd Uiwang Baekun Lake Festival held from September 19 to 20, Muju County in Jeollabuk-do, a domestic sister city, participated by operating promotional booths and direct-sale marketplaces for agricultural specialties. Citizens experienced closer exchanges between sister cities while encountering Muju County's tourism resources and premium local products at the festival.
Additionally, exchanges with Goesan County are pursued in ways closely connected to daily life. Since establishing their sister city relationship in December 2008, Uiwang City and Goesan County have maintained consistent cooperative relations, and recently have been expanding mutual exchanges through the sale of Goesan County's agricultural specialties.
In all six districts of Uiwang City, sales of Goesan County agricultural specialties are regularly promoted, allowing residents to access superior agricultural products conveniently while Goesan County expands its market channels for agricultural products. Now, sister city exchanges are expanding beyond administrative-level visits to include citizen consumption in everyday life.
In this manner, Uiwang City's sister city exchanges do not remain mere courtesy visits. The city deepens the content and substance of exchanges by connecting relationships through festivals, broadening cooperation through invitations, and growing mutual prosperity outcomes through agricultural specialties. It is significant that sister city relationships extend beyond being nominal designations to become practical cooperation that citizens can directly observe, experience, and engage with.
Mayor Kim Sung-je of Uiwang City stated, "Exchanges with domestic sister cities serve as a foundation for mutual prosperity that transcends inter-city friendship and enables us to share each other's strengths and grow together. Going forward, we will continuously expand exchanges that citizens can directly experience across diverse areas including festivals, culture, youth, and regional economy."
