Gyeonggi Province is accepting recommendations for private garden candidate sites through municipalities until September 4 to increase beautiful and distinctive gardens.

Private gardens are gardens created and operated by corporations, organizations, or individuals. To register, green space must comprise at least 40% of the total garden area. Gyeonggi Province recommends a green space area of 330㎡ or more. Facilities such as parking lots and restrooms for visitors must also be provided.

Candidate sites recommended by municipalities undergo preliminary consulting from the Korea Arboretum and Garden Management Corporation, followed by review of registration standards and related laws. Subsequently, on-site surveys and expert evaluations in the garden field are conducted to examine garden development and maintenance status before making a final registration decision.

Separately, Gyeonggi Province plans to conduct on-site reviews in September for two newly registered applicant sites: 'Seokjeong Garden' and 'Supul Baba'. Experts will visit the sites to evaluate garden development and maintenance status and verify compliance with registration standards. If both are registered, the number of private gardens in the province will increase from the current 6 to 8.

Currently, six private gardens are registered in Gyeonggi Province: two in Gapyeong County, two in Yeoju City, one in Yangpyeong County, and one in Hwaseong City. Among these, 'Tasha's Garden 251' in Gapyeong County was selected as one of the 'Top 30 Private Gardens of Korea' in 2024, and 'Our Dream' in Yeoju City won an award at the 'Korea's Most Beautiful Garden Contest' in 2021.

Lee Tae-seon, director of the Garden Industry Division at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We will actively discover beautiful and distinctive gardens hidden throughout the province so more residents can enjoy gardens in nearby locations," and added, "We will continue to support private gardens in establishing themselves as new garden culture spaces in local communities."
