Yeonmu-dong and Seryu 2-dong Selected as Ministry of Land's 'Urban Regeneration New Deal Sites'
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] Yeonmu-dong and Seryu 2-dong in Suwon City were selected on the 8th as sites for the 'Second Half of 2019 Urban Regeneration New Deal Public Offering Project' organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The city plans to finalize and announce its urban regeneration revitalization plan within this year and to implement urban regeneration projects in phases from next year through 2023.
A total of 18.3 billion won will be invested in the Yeonmu-dong area, including 11 billion won in national funds, 2.2 billion won in provincial funds, and 5.1 billion won in city funds. In the Seryu 2-dong area, 16.7 billion won will be provided, including 10 billion won in national funds, 2 billion won in provincial funds, and 6.7 billion won in city funds.
The Yeonmu-dong project site (97,487㎡) has faced limitations in private redevelopment due to cultural heritage-related regulations, causing 'urban decline' to progress rapidly. Considering the area's characteristic of a high proportion of elderly residents, the project will focus on regional regeneration based on residential environment improvement, such as providing integrated care services and upgrading aging residential areas.
The regeneration project plan, with the vision of 'Yeonmu Village, a Happy Living Space Outside Dongmun,' consists of a total of five unit projects: ▲creating a hub space for Yeonmu Village ▲improving the residential environment ▲upgrading the village environment ▲revitalizing the community ▲smart city-type projects.
The Seryu 2-dong project site (133,310㎡) is also an area undergoing urban decline due to development regulations. Based on the capabilities of residents who have carried out village-building projects for 10 years, the project will focus on 'establishing a self-sustaining residential regeneration foundation' and 'revitalizing alley commercial districts.'
The project plan, with the vision of '10 Years of Village-Building, Seryu 2-dong, a Companion Village Moving Forward Together,' consists of three unit projects: ▲creating the Seryu companion hub ▲alley commercial district revitalization project ▲residential environment improvement project.
The Urban Regeneration New Deal policy is an urban innovation project that revitalizes areas undergoing 'urban decline' to improve residents' quality of life and create local jobs. Urban decline is considered to be underway when an area meets two or more of three criteria: decline in 'population,' 'industry,' and 'physical environment.'
Since 2016, the city has been repeatedly selected for 'urban regeneration project' public offerings, accelerating its urban regeneration projects in old downtown areas. With Yeonmu-dong and Seryu 2-dong selected as Urban Regeneration New Deal project sites, the city will now be carrying out urban regeneration projects in five areas within its jurisdiction.
