Suwon City Holds Regular Meetings of Safety Culture Promotion Council and Local Public Safety Council
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] Suwon City reviewed achievements in safety culture and public safety projects carried out over the year at the '2019 Safety Culture Promotion Council·Local Public Safety Council' meeting held on the 18th at the City Hall Disaster and Safety Situation Room.
The meeting was attended by 54 people including Deputy Mayor Cho Mu-young and members of Suwon City's Safety Culture Promotion Council and Local Public Safety Council. The agenda included ▲appointment ceremony for new committee members ▲report on the 2019 Safety Culture Promotion initiatives.
Launched in September 2013 in accordance with the 'Disaster and Safety Management Basic Act,' Suwon City's Safety Culture Promotion Council is an organization that seeks public-private cooperation methods for safety culture promotion.
The Local Public Safety Council, comprising three police precincts (South, Central, and West) overseeing the Suwon area, Suwon Fire Station, Provincial Office of Education, and Suwon Compliance Support Center, shares and discovers policies for citizen safety and public safety.
At the appointment ceremony, the Safety Culture Promotion Council appointed four new members including Han Gyeong-hee, head of the Suwon Community Autonomous Disaster Prevention Council, and In Man-bok, chairman of the Suwon Central Police Station Safe Drivers Association. The Local Public Safety Council appointed five new members including Min Myeong-sik, director of Suwon Youth Delinquency Prevention Center, and Lee Jong-soon, director of Suwon Foreigner Welfare Center.
At the Safety Culture Promotion initiative report session, Suwon City presented its accomplishments in three areas: ▲safety reporting ▲safety education ▲safety inspection,' carried out this year.
The city conducted 'safety reporting' projects including operating the Safety Report Box, launching safety pledge campaigns, and operating Suwon City Mobile Patrol and Parents·Mothers Police.
The city also conducted 'safety education' targeting citizens. From March to December, 'customized on-site safety education' was provided 67 times to approximately 4,160 people including children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. Last October, the city held 'Suwon Citizens' Safety Experience Festival' where approximately 5,000 citizens could experience and learn about safety accidents such as earthquakes.
The city also implemented 'safety inspection' projects for citizen safety. The city regularly held 'Safety Inspection Day' campaigns each month and conducted safety inspections on children's play facilities and disaster-vulnerable facilities.
The city also promoted the '2019 Safety Infrastructure Improvement Project' to create a safer urban environment. Across Suwon City, mural painting projects to improve deteriorated street environments, road paving, and installation and repair of fire extinguisher boxes, lighting, and CCTV were carried out.
In particular, in the Gokbanjeong-dong one-room apartment dense area, which was identified as a crime-vulnerable area, safety booths and police boxes were installed where immediate help could be requested during emergencies, and LED lighting was installed throughout alleyways. Deteriorated roads were repaved.
Presiding over the meeting, Deputy Mayor Cho Mu-young stated, "If the public and private sectors cooperate in promoting safety projects and citizens make efforts to overcome indifference to safety, we can create a safer city," and urged, "I ask all committee members to actively participate in grassroots safety culture promotion."
