Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young: "Local Economy Requires 'Excessive Response' Like Virus Prevention"
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] As Suwon's local economy faces difficulties due to the impact of the novel coronavirus, Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young has pledged active measures for economic recovery.
During a "Novel Coronavirus Infection Response Progress Report" held at City Hall on the 11th, Mayor Yeom urged, "So that the local economy, which has stagnated due to the virus impact, can revive, actively inform citizens of our city's response measures to infectious diseases and alleviate their anxiety."
Mayor Yeom stated, "Economic trends are greatly influenced by consumer sentiment," and instructed, "So that citizens can conduct economic activities with confidence, accurately inform them of our city's status of novel coronavirus infection and our infectious disease control system."
He continued, "Although a second confirmed patient (the 20th case) occurred in our city on the 5th, this person was under our city's one-on-one monitoring and control. We are doing our best to prevent the spread of community infection, and given the progress we've made, I hope citizens will trust our city's disease control capabilities and live their lives as they did before the 'novel coronavirus crisis,'" he requested.
Mayor Yeom Tae-young said, "Following the novel coronavirus infection crisis, visitor numbers to traditional markets in our city have dropped by more than half, and businesses are also facing difficulties." He instructed, "Centered around the 'Economic Task Force Team,' formulate measures that will substantially help revitalize the local economy and implement them immediately." He added, "An 'excessive response' is also necessary in solving the local economic downturn problem."
Furthermore, he requested cooperation from merchants, saying, "If merchants thoroughly wear masks and place hand sanitizers in their shops, citizens will be able to visit with confidence."
Currently, traditional markets in the area are experiencing sharply reduced visitor numbers, with many shops advancing their closing times by approximately one hour, and large-scale retailers are also seeing fewer customers.
