Fresh Air for Suwon City...'Suwon-style Fine Dust Management Master Plan' Launched
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] Suwon City announced on the 6th that it will implement the '2020 Suwon-style Fine Dust Management Master Plan' to create a safe city free from fine dust concerns.
The city has established a fine dust management master plan targeting a 10% reduction of the 2020 ultrafine dust BAU (projected total emissions when local governments make no separate fine dust reduction efforts) of 465 tons.
Previously, the Suwon City Research Institute predicted Suwon City's ultrafine dust emissions in 2020 to be 465 tons through the '2018 Suwon City Air Pollutant Emission Target Setting Study'.
The city has formulated three strategies—▲reduction of fine dust emissions ▲citizen health protection ▲strengthening response capacity and establishing policy foundations—to implement customized projects targeting 10% reduction of the projected emissions.
To reduce fine dust emissions, the city will systematically implement fine dust reduction projects across sectors including transportation, industry, daily life, and green spaces.
In the transportation sector, the city will continue to implement vehicle grade 5 operation restrictions (when fine dust reduction measures are implemented) and will promote early scrapping of aged diesel vehicles (approximately 5,000 vehicles), installation of emission reduction devices (approximately 2,400 vehicles), supply of electric buses and eco-friendly vehicles (1,196 units), and installation of electric bus charging facilities (26 locations) and hydrogen vehicle charging facilities (1 location).
In the industrial sector, the city will strengthen inspections of air emission facilities and will continue expanding the supply of eco-friendly low-NOx burners and boilers, operating road dust suppression sprinkler trucks, and implementing urban forest and ecological park projects.
For the citizen health protection strategy, the city will establish a crisis alert level response system (comprising 13 disaster response implementation groups) with emphasis on establishing an ultrafine dust disaster response system and strengthening health protection for vulnerable populations, and will implement support projects providing air purifiers and fine dust masks to vulnerable groups.
The city will also implement projects aimed at strengthening fine dust response capacity (education and information disclosure) and establishing policy foundations (cooperation).
The city will implement various educational programs targeting citizens, including training for ultrafine dust management specialists and visiting fine dust education, and will transparently disclose fine dust measurement results and data in real-time using air quality display boards.
Policy foundation projects include organizing and operating a fine dust countermeasures consultation council and establishing 'Suwon City Fine Dust Management Master Plan (commissioned project, June 2019 ~ September 2020)'.
A city official stated, "We will continue to reduce fine dust emissions on a regular basis and discover and implement effective projects so that citizens can live in a pleasant environment," and added, "We ask for your active participation."
Meanwhile, the city actively implemented reduction projects in the automotive sector last year and achieved an 8% reduction in emissions compared to the '2019 ultrafine dust BAU of 473 tons'.
