Suwon Agricultural and Aquatic Products Wholesale Market: 10 Types of Seafood Pass Radiation Safety Tests
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] Suwon City announced on the 25th that 10 types of seafood distributed at the Suwon Agricultural and Aquatic Products Wholesale Market passed radiation safety inspection tests with a "conforming" rating.
The agricultural and aquatic products wholesale market commissioned the Gyeonggi Province Institute of Health and Environment's Agricultural and Aquatic Products Safety Testing Center to conduct radiation safety inspections on 10 types of seafood circulated in the market (black seabream, flathead flounder, octopus, squid, mussels, rockfish, flounder, pollock, anglerfish, and Japanese Spanish mackerel) on the 17th. Honorary observers accompanied the collection of seafood samples.
The Gyeonggi Province Institute of Health and Environment tested whether radioactive materials such as iodine and cesium were present in the seafood at or above regulatory standards. The institute reported to the wholesale market that "all 10 types of seafood are safe."
The agricultural and aquatic products wholesale market has conducted safety inspections on 235 units of distributed seafood over 28 occasions since January 2014, and all have received "conforming" ratings. The market also received "conforming" ratings in radiation inspections in February this year and heavy metals inspections in April.
An official from Suwon City's Agricultural and Aquatic Products Wholesale Market Management Division stated, "We will do our best to manage food safety," and added, "We will inspect all agricultural and aquatic products distributed through the wholesale market to create a market that citizens can trust."
The agricultural and aquatic products wholesale market is currently completing the first phase of facility modernization construction and preparing to relocate the fruit and seafood sections. The market is scheduled to hold its first auction at the newly constructed premises on September 7th.
