Suwon City Runs 'Saebit Eco-Mobility+ Car-Free Day' to Lead the Way as a 'Carbon-Neutral City'

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Jeong Jun-seong] Suwon Special City announced on the 17th that it will run the 'Saebit Eco-Mobility+ Car-Free Day' at 12 locations across 11 neighborhoods until October, in order to lead the way as a 'carbon-neutral city' and build a sustainable future city.

The Saebit Eco-Mobility+ Car-Free Day, which begins on the 18th in Yeonmu-dong (Bandibul Market) and Gokseon-dong (roads near Sandeul Children's Park), will be held in the first half of the year in a total of 7 neighborhoods, including Jeongja 3-dong (May 25), Pyeong-dong (June 8), Haenggung-dong (June 8 and 15), Guun-dong (June 15), and Jeongja 2-dong (June 15). A total of 12 groups plan to hold the event more than twice a year. Haenggung-dong, a representative tourist destination in Suwon, will hold the event on June 8 and 15 on Haengridan-gil and Gongbang-geori (Workshop Street).

The Saebit Eco-Mobility+ Car-Free Day is a citizen-led project in which residents themselves control traffic on certain sections of road and plan and run eco-mobility-related programs.

Saebit Eco-Mobility+ strengthens accessibility and solidarity in the existing eco-mobility policy that regenerated the deteriorated old downtown area of Haenggung-dong through an urban regeneration project. The goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by creating a people-centered street environment and to build a sustainable future city.

On the 7th, the city held a capacity-building workshop for representatives of the resident groups at the 12 locations that will run the Car-Free Day events, as well as for the officials in charge.

A city official said, "Starting this year, we will make the Car-Free Day a regular event to contribute to carbon neutrality," adding, "We hope that by running a Car-Free Day that everyone can enjoy, we can create car-free streets where citizens can walk safely and improve their quality of life."
