[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Lee Suwon] Hwaseong City announced on the 14th that it is operating water misting systems (hereinafter referred to as "cooling fog") installed throughout the Saesol-dong area to prepare for the ongoing extreme heat.

'Cooling fog' is a device that uses special nozzles to spray purified tap water as artificial fog at a size of approximately one ten-millionth of a raindrop using high pressure. As the sprayed water vaporizes in the air, it has the effect of lowering the surrounding temperature by approximately 3-5°C.

Previously, the city selected 10 sections in the Saesol-dong area with heavy pedestrian traffic, including schools, parks, and commercial districts, as part of its smart green city development project and completed the installation of cooling fog systems in November of last year.

Prior to operating the cooling fog system, the city conducted preliminary inspections of the facilities with representatives of Saesol-dong residents to improve citizen satisfaction and discussed operational hours. After trial operations in May, the city began full-scale operations in June.

Oh Je-hong, Director of the Environment Bureau, said, "As the extreme heat crisis alert level due to climate change continues, we will properly operate the cooling fog facilities and make efforts to prevent heat-related illnesses and maintain the health of vulnerable populations."
