Suwon establishes 'Design Competition Operating Committee' to drive public building design innovation

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Jung Jun-sung] Suwon Special City has established a 'Design Competition Operating Committee' to drive innovation in public building design.

The Design Competition Operating Committee is composed of nine private sector experts in urban planning and architecture, including Hong Kyung-gu (Professor of Architecture at Dankook University), who serves as the master planner. The city held a formal appointment ceremony for the committee members on the 21st at the City Hall situation room.

The Design Competition Operating Committee advises on the overall operations of the design competition review committee to ensure that public building design quality improves and technical reviews are conducted during design competitions.

Key responsibilities include △selecting the optimal competition format suited to the scale and characteristics of the project △composing the review committee by considering the building's purpose, intent, and specialized fields △reviewing competition guidelines to facilitate smooth project implementation △and advising on other matters related to the review committee's operations.

The city plans to operate the Design Competition Operating Committee for three public building projects this year: the Jowon-1 District Complex Cultural Center, the Maetan-1 District Administrative and Welfare Center, and the Maekyo District Complex Administrative Building.

The Jowon-1 District Complex Cultural Center construction project will invest a total of 17.9 billion won to expand community autonomous space and public parking facilities with a total floor area of approximately 2,900 square meters. Since the existing administrative and welfare center is too small, community program operations have been distributed, and residents have continuously requested the construction of the cultural center.

The Maetan-1 District Administrative and Welfare Center construction project will invest a total of 15 billion won to rebuild the aging administrative building at approximately 2,900 square meters in total floor area. With population growth expected due to nearby residential reconstruction and development projects, plans are underway to construct a new building to replace the outdated and undersized existing facility.

The Maekyo District Complex Administrative Building construction project involves reconstructing an administrative and welfare center that was demolished due to inclusion in a nearby residential redevelopment project. It will invest a total of 36.1 billion won to construct an administrative and welfare center with a total floor area of 6,900 square meters, including sports and welfare facilities.

Second Vice Mayor Hyun Geun-taek stated, "Urban design is an important element in enhancing urban brand value," and added, "I hope that the introduction of the Design Competition Operating Committee will move away from uniform and authoritarian design toward innovative and creative design, strengthening urban competitiveness and serving as an opportunity to transform citizens' daily lives."
