Editorial Increase Attention to Visitor Safety at '2026 Suwon National Heritage Night Walk'
Once again this year, the festival '2026 Suwon National Heritage Night Walk-Tenth Night, Suwon Yeonhyang,' which allows visitors to enjoy summer nights in Suwon, will be held for three days from August 14 to 16 at Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and surrounding cultural facilities. The Suwon National Heritage Night Walk is a signature nighttime event of Suwon hosted by Suwon Metropolitan City, organized by the Suwon Cultural Foundation, and sponsored by the Cultural Heritage Administration. During the abundant nighttime festival where people, light, music, and stories blend together, visitors can enjoy various performances, exhibitions, and experiences at Suwon Hwaseong and surrounding cultural facilities.
This year, in particular, the event space, which had been primarily held around Yongyeon, has been expanded to include Hwaseong Haenggung Plaza and the areas near Paldalmun Gate. As a result, visitors can enjoy Suwon Hwaseong's night in a more diverse and extensive manner. Moreover, it is expected to bring vitality to nearby commercial areas.
The event is composed of an '8 Nights' program with eight themes: △night scenery △night path △night history △night paintings △night tales △night market △night food △night lodging, and street artists perform at major locations throughout the fortress, turning the entire area into a vibrant festival venue.
There is a reason why Suwon City is showing genuine commitment to this festival. It expands opportunities for citizens' cultural enjoyment. In addition, it attracts both domestic and international visitors, widely promotes Suwon's value, and contributes to the local economy.
At the '2025 festival monitoring results' forum held by the Suwon Metropolitan City Research Institute on July 23, titled 'Cultural Impact Assessment, Questioning the Value of Suwon's Three Major Autumn Festivals,' results of monitoring the 2025 festivals (floating population, card sales, and citizen and tourist surveys) drew attention. It showed that Suwon's three major autumn festivals attracted approximately 1.125 million domestic and international visitors and significantly expanded citizens' physical and digital cultural enjoyment rights.
Approximately 100,000 tourists visited the '2025 Suwon National Heritage Night Walk' held by Suwon City for four days last year. Given that the number of domestic and international travelers visiting Suwon is gradually increasing, it is expected that even more people will participate in the Suwon Night Walk this year.
Therefore, as pointed out at the research institute forum, it is necessary to strengthen experiential content that can enhance on-site engagement and enjoyment. Additionally, since there are concerns about congestion with many people visiting the venue until late hours, visitor safety measures must be thoroughly established. Furthermore, special attention should be paid to the management of cultural heritage, which tends to be neglected at night. In addition, considering parking and accessibility for people with disabilities, we hope this will become the most successful night walk event to date.
