Yongin Banddabi Sports Center Construction Plan Passes City Council as Long-Awaited Goal of 8th Popular Election Term
The Banddabi Sports Center construction plan promoted by Yongin Special City (Mayor Lee Sang-il) since the 8th popular election term passed the Yongin Special City Council on the 8th, advancing into full-scale implementation.
The city announced that the 2026 Fourth Public Property Management Plan (non-regular division) for the construction of the Yongin Banddabi Sports Center was approved at the second plenary session of the first regular meeting of the 306th Yongin City Council that day.
Accordingly, the city plans to carry out procedures including feasibility studies in accordance with the Construction Technology Promotion Act this year, and will proceed with basic and detailed design after going through the Central Construction Technology Deliberation Committee of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in 2027.
Mayor Lee Sang-il stated, "The passage of the Banddabi Sports Center construction plan, a sports facility for use by both people with and without disabilities, through the city council plenary session was due to the strong aspirations of people with disabilities and citizens to lower barriers between people with and without disabilities and to install good sports facilities for people with disabilities." He added, "We will proceed with subsequent administrative procedures smoothly to ensure there are no setbacks in the construction of the Banddabi Sports Center."
The Banddabi Sports Center is a public sports facility designed for use by both people with and without disabilities, and will include a 50-meter swimming pool with 10 lanes of Korean Amateur Swimming Federation Grade 2 certified specifications and spectator seating for over 2,000 people.
Yongin's Banddabi Sports Center will be built on the temporary parking lot site of Yongin Mirs Stadium in Samga-dong, Cheoein-gu, with a total floor area (gross floor area) of 23,700 square meters, including a parking tower.
The city was selected in the 2024 Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's community-based (disability-type) National Sports Center construction competition and secured 4 billion won in national funds as part of the construction budget.
The city plans to share the implementation status of the Banddabi Sports Center with officials from organizations including the Yongin City Sports Association for People with Disabilities, disability sports organizations, the Korean Federation of Parents of Children with Disabilities Yongin Chapter, the Gyeonggi Province Deaf Association Yongin Chapter, and the Yongin Independent Living Center for People with Disabilities, while identifying requirements to be reflected in future design and operational plans, and will reflect them in the design.
