Deputy Governor Joo Hyung-chul Visits Yongin Semiconductor Cluster to Check Progress

Deputy Governor of Economy Joo Hyung-chul of Gyeonggi Province visited the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex construction site in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin City and the Gosam Reservoir in Anseong on the 17th, along the courses of Jaesmal Stream, Godang Stream, and Hancheon Stream, to examine the progress of the complex's development and discuss support measures with related officials.

The Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex, being constructed on an area of 4,155,996 square meters (approximately 1.26 million pyeong) in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin City, broke ground in April 2022 and is being promoted with a completion target of December 2027. The total project cost is approximately 3.8045 trillion won, and SK Hynix and approximately 50 semiconductor-related companies are scheduled to move in.

The on-site visit was arranged to discuss wastewater issues for the smooth development of the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex. In August, Governor Chu Mi-ae of Gyeonggi Province stated that water supply necessary for the semiconductor industry and companies' efforts to reduce wastewater discharge should proceed together, and requested that the government strengthen environmental standards related to wastewater discharge from the Gosam Reservoir and that companies reduce semiconductor process wastewater discharge.

On-site participants included officials from related Gyeonggi Province departments such as the Semiconductor Industry Division, Climate and Environmental Management Division, and Institute of Health and Environment, as well as corporate representatives from SK Hynix and Yongin General Industrial Complex Co., Ltd.

Participants listened to the overall project progress at the on-site office, then conducted sequential inspections of the entire wastewater discharge route to check wastewater purification processes and water quality management plans, and shared overall opinions on environmental issues.

Deputy Governor Joo Hyung-chul emphasized, "The Yongin Semiconductor Cluster is a key foundation that will determine the future competitiveness of Korea's semiconductor industry," and urged "Related organizations must verify whether the water quality improvement measures established by companies are appropriate, and companies must strengthen communication with residents and prepare effective mutually beneficial measures to ensure the industrial complex is developed on schedule."
