Suwon City Begins Working-Level Consultations with Defense Ministry on Suwon Air Force Base Relocation

Suwon City announced on the 20th that it has begun working-level consultations with the Defense Ministry regarding the relocation of Suwon Air Force Base, with officials from both the Defense Ministry and Suwon City in attendance.

According to the city, the working-level consultations held at the Defense Ministry have covered feasibility reviews of Suwon City's relocation proposal for the air base and conflict management measures related to the relocation. So far, a total of four consultations have been held.

Currently, the working-level discussions are known to focus on the feasibility and appropriateness of the relocation plan for the air base site submitted by the city, as well as on the possibility of securing necessary funding.

The city explained that by highlighting the locational advantages of Suwon Air Force Base and the development potential of the Seoul metropolitan area, it can secure funds for new military airport construction and support projects for residents in areas affected by the relocation.

Regarding conflict management in the relocation target areas, it is known that when preliminary candidate relocation sites are selected, conflict management assessments will be conducted through specialized studies to diagnose and analyze the situation and develop response measures.

On March 20, the city submitted a military airport relocation proposal to the Defense Ministry that calls for developing the 5.25 million square meter Suwon Air Base site into an airfield-themed park, advanced research complex, medical park, and low-density residential area, while securing 4.5 trillion won in funding to construct a new military airport.
