Woo Sang-hyeok of Yongin City Wins Bronze in Asian Games High Jump

Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il presents a competition preparation allowance to athlete Woo Sang-hyeok on behalf of the city's athletes competing in the Asian Games on September 2. Provided by Yongin CityWoo Sang-hyeok, an athlete on the track and field team of the Yongin Special City (Mayor Lee Sang-il) athletic club, won a bronze medal with a record of 2m22 in the men's high jump final at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games held on the 27th at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

This marks his third consecutive medal at the Asian Games, following silver medals at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games and the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

After clearing the 2m22 bar, Woo failed twice at 2m25, then attempted a decisive jump at 2m28, an additional 3cm height, but failed to clear it and finished in third place.

In an interview conducted at the venue after the competition, Woo said, "It turned out to be a competition where I could overcome trauma, and I'm relieved. I'll overcome it well and reach even greater heights."

Mayor Lee Sang-il stated, "I am proud that Woo Sang-hyeok earned this glorious bronze medal despite doing his best under adverse conditions, including aftereffects from injury and having to compete on a wet track due to rain. On behalf of the 1.11 million residents of Yongin City, I express respect to Woo, who is achieving excellent results at international competitions, raising the status of Yongin Special City and making great contributions to the development of Korean track and field."

Woo is scheduled to participate in the 2026 Korea Joa Yong Festival held on October 3 at Yongin Mir Stadium in Cheoin-gu, Yongin.
