Yongin Central Market Underground Cabling Project Over 283-Meter Section to Ease Traffic Congestion

Yongin Special City (Mayor Lee Sang-il) announced on the 28th that it will underground cables in the area around 133-63 Kimnyang-jang-dong, Cheoein-gu at Yongin Central Market next year to improve the market's aesthetics and address inconveniences for citizens.

The underground cabling project will take place on a 283-meter section spanning Geumryeong-ro 85-gil, known as the Woori Bank alley, and Geumryeong-ro 71-gil, an alley that intersects with this road.

From January through December next year, the city plans to remove nine utility poles owned by Korea Electric Power Corporation and underground the power lines over the 283-meter section with a budget of 1.4 billion won, comprising 350 million won in national funds and 1.05 billion won in city funds.

The Yongin Central Market Merchants Association had consistently requested the underground cabling project from the city, noting that despite the street being developed as a cultural district, the remaining utility poles and power lines damaged the aesthetics and posed difficulties for various events.

In response, the city submitted an application to the government for the underground cabling project in this area in July last year, and was selected for the project in January this year. The city is currently proceeding with detailed design work.

The city plans to complete the underground cabling project next year and will proceed with the creation of "Deul-Rak-Nal-Rak Street" (들樂날樂거리) as a remodeling project of the existing cultural district in 2028.

Yongin Special City Mayor Lee Sang-il stated, "The city is making diverse efforts to revitalize Yongin Central Market, a representative traditional market in Yongin, including undertaking large-scale urban regeneration projects," and added, "Along with the underground cabling project, we will accelerate the establishment of a smart work platform to expand parking spaces."
