Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young: "Legal Enactment and Amendment, Decentralization-Oriented Constitutional Revision Must Be Expedited"
[Suwon Ilbo=Seo Dong-young Reporter] The joint executive board of the Association of Mayors, County Governors, and District Chiefs (Representative Chairman Yeom Tae-young, Suwon Mayor) visited National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang in the Speaker's reception room at the National Assembly on the 29th morning.
The executive board recommended to Speaker Moon the prompt passage of the 'Full Revision of the Local Autonomy Law' currently pending in the National Assembly and the National Assembly's legislation on financial decentralization centered on basic local governments.
They also demanded the re-promotion of 'Decentralization-Oriented Constitutional Revision,' which was pursued during the last presidential election to more firmly guarantee local autonomy of cities, counties, and districts, but whose discussion has recently declined.
In addition, they delivered the 'Five Declarations for Overcoming the Crisis of Basic Local Governments' announced by the executive board in July to the National Assembly Speaker and explained its contents.
Representative Chairman Yeom Tae-young stated, "Currently, the local autonomy promotion project is being pursued centered on metropolitan cities and provinces. It is viewed as a very serious issue by frontline cities, counties, and districts." He continued, "I recommended to the National Assembly Speaker to promptly promote the enactment and amendment of various laws for grassroots local autonomy and further pursue decentralization-oriented constitutional revision."
