Suwon City Holds Kick-off Meeting for Research Service on Comprehensive Fine Dust Management Plan
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Kang Han-seo] Suwon City is analyzing the causes of fine dust emissions by sector and their impact on citizens' health to develop fine dust management measures that reflect regional characteristics.
On the 11th, the city held the ‘Kick-off Meeting for the Research Service on Establishing a Comprehensive Fine Dust Management Plan’ at the situation room of City Hall, launching the establishment of the comprehensive plan. The Suwon Research Institute and Nine Eco Co., Ltd. will carry out the service. The service period runs until September 2020.
The service tasks include ▲a full survey of fine dust emission sources in Suwon City ▲analysis of internal and external causes of fine dust generation ▲analysis of fine dust concentration according to sectoral characteristics ▲setting improvement targets for the amount of fine dust generated ▲preparing measures to protect citizens' health ▲and economic feasibility analysis by reduction measure.
Through this service, the city plans to improve the accuracy of measuring the amount of fine dust generated by conducting a full survey of places that had not previously been reflected in the calculation of fine dust emission sources, such as group meal facilities and small-scale air pollution emission facilities.
In addition, it will analyze fine dust concentration according to various characteristics such as land, population, residential type, and industry, and create an ‘air quality model’ that reflects internal and external causes of generation. The air quality model will be used to analyze the effects of each fine dust reduction measure. It will also analyze facilities heavily used by groups vulnerable to fine dust, such as infants, toddlers, and the elderly and infirm, to prepare customized health protection measures for each group.
Furthermore, the city plans to establish a ‘Suwon-style comprehensive fine dust management measure long- and short-term roadmap’ by reflecting the results of the service as well as the opinions of citizens and experts gathered through surveys and discussion forums.
Meanwhile, about 30 people attended the kick-off meeting that day, including Kim Gyo-won, Director of the Environment Bureau of Suwon City; Hwang Kyung-hee, a Suwon City Council member; Jang Young-gi, a professor at Suwon University; and Kim Dong-young, Ph.D. of the Gyeonggi Research Institute.
Environment Bureau Director Kim Gyo-won said, “We will respond to fine dust by devising every possible measure to improve citizens' quality of life and protect their health,” adding, “Through this service, we will professionalize the management system for fine dust emission sources and prepare feasible response measures.”
