Pyeongtaek City Issues Alert on Measles Cases from Overseas
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] Pyeongtaek City has urged residents to consult with the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency Call Center at 1339 or local health centers if they suspect measles symptoms and receive medical examination.
Three measles patients in their 20s and 30s who traveled to Thailand during the Chuseok holiday this month have been confirmed in Pyeongtaek City.
Measles, which has an incubation period of three weeks, is a viral infection that presents symptoms such as fever, cough, and conjunctivitis. It spreads through the air via sneezing and is characterized by rapid and strong transmissibility. Those infected must wear masks, minimize contact with others, and receive hospitalization treatment.
An official from Songtan Health Center stated, "Measles can be prevented in advance through two vaccinations. Children under 12 months must not miss the first dose (12-15 months) and second dose (4-6 years) vaccination schedules. Those who have not been vaccinated are advised to receive vaccinations at nearby hospitals, clinics, or health centers."
The official added, "When traveling to countries with measles outbreaks, washing hands with running water for more than 30 seconds can block over 60 percent of viruses and bacteria. Please follow basic health guidelines such as cough etiquette."
