Gyeonggi Province Launches Task Force for 'Self-Sufficient Third New Towns'

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Park No-hun] Gyeonggi Province has organized the 'Task Force for Creating Future Self-Sufficient Third New Towns' on the 6th and begun full-scale operations to establish a successful model for large-scale housing sites including the Third New Towns being pursued as part of the government's metropolitan housing supply policy.
Among the Third New Towns, 240,000 housing units will be supplied in Gyeonggi Province. The province serves as the project implementer for 100,500 units across three sites: 'Wangsuk and Wangsuk 2' in Namyangju, 'Gyosan' in Hanam, and 'Gwacheon District' in Gwacheon, providing administrative support. For the projects in Hanam and Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Urban Development Corporation will also participate.
The task force is composed of 21 departments of Gyeonggi Province, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, Gyeonggi Urban Development Corporation, and LH. Through this task force organization, the province plans to take the lead not only in planning as the project implementer for the government's Third New Towns policy but also to serve as an integrated communication channel encompassing 'central government, local governments, and project implementers.'
At its first meeting held on that day, the task force shared models for strengthening self-sufficient functions, including the status of Pangyo Techno Valley development, and discussed future new transportation methods such as Personal Mobility activation and eco-friendly (hydrogen and electric) charging infrastructure.
The task force also reached consensus on cooperating with the central government to the maximum extent to ensure appropriate supply of wide-area transportation means such as railroads, BRT, and buses.
About 16 projects were selected on that day, covering transportation, self-sufficiency, planning, implementation, administrative support, and specialized development. The province plans to concretize and specialize the projects through joint reviews in the future.
The task force is expected to operate continuously targeting seven large-scale housing sites of over 1 million square meters, organized by field, district, and institution. It will also accommodate opinions from municipal governments to the maximum extent and conduct joint reviews.
Kim Jun-tae, Director of the Urban and Housing Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, said at the meeting: "The Third New Towns are cities we create together. We will make efforts to develop them as cities with enhanced self-sufficient functions by complementing the problems of the First and Second New Towns."
Son Im-sung, Urban Policy Director of Gyeonggi Province, who presided over the meeting, said: "Core elements welcomed by the people through the policies of the 7th Popular Elected Term must be well incorporated into the new town plan, so that the Third New Towns should not just be about housing supply but should be a leap forward for new urban development."
