[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] Suwon City was selected as a meritorious organization for ‘cloud industry development’ at the ‘Grand Cloud Conference’ held at COEX in Seoul on the 3rd and received a commendation from the Minister of Science and ICT, uniquely as the only local government entity.
The ‘Grand Cloud Conference,’ hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and organized by the Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency and the Korea Information Society Development Institute, is an event where innovative cases from public and private sectors based on the convergence of cloud and emerging technologies are shared. The ‘Commendation for Merit in Cloud Industry Development’ is an award given to discover and encourage organizations that have contributed to cloud utilization activation policies and industry fostering.
Cloud refers to an information system framework that provides information and communication resources as services that can be flexibly utilized according to user demand and changes in needs, and is a core technology of the fourth industrial revolution.
The city began cloud consulting in 2017 to enhance efficiency in information resource operations and system stability, and to reduce information system operational costs. Last year, it constructed its own cloud system and migrated 31 individual servers that had reached the end of their lifespan to 5 cloud servers.
This year, the city migrated 42 individual servers to 7 cloud servers, and plans to migrate 27 individual servers in 2020.
Additionally, to address problems such as increased costs and reduced work efficiency from operating individual information systems at 13 affiliated agencies under the city, the city plans to construct an integrated work support system based on private cloud infrastructure from 2020 through 2024.
A city official stated, “With the construction of the cloud system, information security has been strengthened and maintenance costs have been reduced, improving overall information system operations,” and added, “We will make efforts to further promote cloud system distribution.”
