Osan City Reduces Maximum Capacity of Pay-Per-Use Garbage Bags to 75 Liters

[Suwon Ilbo=Seo Dong-young Reporter] Osan City announced on the 10th that it will reduce the maximum capacity of pay-per-use garbage bags for household waste from 100 liters to 75 liters and discontinue production of 100-liter pay-per-use bags to prevent safety accidents among environmental sanitation workers.

While the weight limit for 100-liter pay-per-use bags is 25kg, if residents do not follow proper tying procedures and compress the bags, the weight can increase to up to 45kg. This has led to injuries and safety accidents among environmental sanitation workers engaged in repetitive collection work.

The city plans to discontinue production of 100-liter pay-per-use bags starting in October and will manufacture and sell 75-liter pay-per-use bags during October at 2,000 won per bag.

Already-produced 100-liter pay-per-use bags will continue to be sold until stock is exhausted. They can still be used and disposed of.

Additionally, the city plans to newly manufacture and sell small-sized pay-per-use bags (3 liters for general use, 5 liters for reuse) to accommodate the increase in single-person households and eliminate the use of disposable plastic bags.

The city expects the measure to improve inconveniences for single-person households and others who need to store garbage for extended periods, and to be effective in reducing illegal dumping.

A city official stated, "As a system improvement measure to create a safe working environment for environmental sanitation workers, we ask for the understanding and cooperation of citizens despite any inconvenience they may experience."
