Suwon Agricultural & Fishery Wholesale Market Seafood Products Pass Heavy Metal Safety Tests
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] Heavy metal inspection results for seafood products distributed at the Aquatic Products Division of Suwon Agricultural & Fishery Wholesale Market (located in Gwonseon-dong, Gwonseon-gu), which recently relocated and opened in its new facility, have shown that the products are safe for consumption.
Suwon City announced on the 3rd that 10 types of seafood products—oysters, rockfish, octopus, flounder, coquina clams, sea bream, Korean sea bass, mackerel, cutlassfish, and crucian carp—distributed at Suwon Agricultural & Fishery Wholesale Market have been certified as "compliant" in heavy metal safety inspections.
On November 23rd, the wholesale market requested heavy metal safety inspections for 10 types of seafood from the Gyeonggi Province Institute of Health & Environment's Agricultural & Fishery Products Safety Testing Center.
After collecting seafood samples, the Gyeonggi Province Institute of Health & Environment conducted inspections to determine whether heavy metal substances (lead, cadmium, mercury, etc.) exceeded the established standards. On the 1st, it notified the wholesale market that "all 10 types of seafood are safe."
Suwon Agricultural & Fishery Wholesale Market regularly conducts heavy metal and radioactivity safety inspections on distributed seafood products. From January 2014 to present, safety inspections have been conducted on 245 batches of distributed seafood across 29 occasions. All results were marked as compliant.
An official from the city's Agricultural & Fishery Wholesale Market Management Division stated, "We will continue to conduct thorough safety inspections on agricultural and fishery products to create a food environment that citizens can trust."
Meanwhile, the Fruit & Aquatic Products Division of Suwon Agricultural & Fishery Wholesale Market has been operating in a newly constructed building located in the former Vegetable Division area since September.
